Question:
Our physicians are looking at purchasing generic Hyaluronan instead of purchasing the name brand Orthovisc or MonoVisc for example. In doing research, I am not finding any NDC codes or HCPCS codes that specifically address the generic Hyaluronan.
I also came across this list of Hyaluronic Acid Derivatives. If I am reading correctly, it would not be possible to decide which drug the physician might be giving if the vial just stated “hyaluronan”
HYALURONIC ACID DERIVATIVES
1. Durolane, Euflexxa, GelSyn-3, GenVisc 850, Hyalgan, Sodium Hyaluronate, Supartz, Synojoynt*, Triluron, TriVisc, Visco-3 (Sodium Hyaluronate)
2. Gel-ONE, Hymovis, Monovisc, Orthovisc (Hyaluronan)
3. Synvisc, Synvisc-One (Hylan G-F 20)
May we submit the traditional J code (J7327-Monovisc) for the generic Hyaluronan 88 mg?
Answer:
Thank you for your inquiry and kudos to your physicians in having you do your due diligence before they make the switch. Report J3490 for any generic Hyaluronic Acid Derivatives; include comments in box 19 that J3490 describes generic Hyaluronan (your example), include the drug dose and the name of the comparison trademark drug name.
