Tattoo Redo After Reconstruction

Tattoo Redo After Reconstruction

December 5, 2019

Question:
A patient came to us for a redo of nipple micropigmentation, as she was not pleased with the result from the tattoo artist. Our surgeon did not perform the initial nipple reconstruction, but our PA will be re-tattooing the patient. How do we bill for this?

Answer:
Since your surgeon did not perform the initial reconstruction, you can use the tattoo codes 11921-11922 Tattooing, intradermal introduction of insoluble opaque pigments to correct color defects of skin, including micropigmentation according to size. Documentation to support the charge should be present within the procedure note to explain why it was performed. It is advised to contact any payor prior to the procedure for coverage benefits or predetermination needs.
