Venous Stents – Are they Coded by Vascular Territory?

March 17, 2016

Question:
I understand that arterial stenting in the lower extremities is coded based on vascular territory; the iliac, fem-pop and tibial-peroneal territories. Do these same territories apply for venous stenting in the lower extremities?

Answer:
Good question. These relatively new codes (established in 2014) do not follow the vascular territories as described for lower extremity arterial stenting. To code lower extremity venous stenting, the first vein is coded with 37238 and each additional vein, in the same or opposite extremity, is reported with the add-on code, 37239.
