Question:
What is the correct code to report for the insertion and subsequent lengthening of the VEPTR device?
Answer:
VEPTR is the abbreviation for Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib
Currently there are no codes for this procedure, where the device is typically attached to the ribs, spine or pelvis. Report an unlisted code, 22899, for both the insertion and the lengthening. If you are using a rib-to-rib only device, some payors may want an unlisted thoracic code instead; KZA recommends the unlisted spine code.
Compare the insertion code to the appropriate instrumentation code (e.g. 22840, 22842), based upon points of attachment
For the lengthening, you may compare code 22849 and reduce the fee accordingly.
