Question:
We have recently begun treating our psoriasis patients using XTRAC laser therapy. I have looked extensively and cannot find a CPT code for this procedure. Can you help me?
Answer:
The XTRAC excimer laser is reimbursed by most payors for mild to moderate plaque psoriasis by most major insurance carriers. Some insurance carriers required preauthorization for this procedure. CPT codes 96920,96921 and 96922 are the appropriate codes to use. These codes are based on sq CM size of the area treated. Make sure documentation includes the location of the area treated and square CM size of area treated. Since this treatment involves multiple patient encounters on different dates of service make sure you provide the insurance carrier if preauthorization is required with an estimate of number of treatment sessions needed to manage the psoriasis. Please refer to: CPT® Assistant September 2016 / Volume 26 Issue 9 for coding laser treatment for psoriasis.
